We are an organization committed to preserving Indonesia’s tropical rainforests through education, ecotourism, and community empowerment.

Our Roots:
Why We Started

It all began with a simple realization—Indonesia’s forests were under threat from deforestation, land-use changes, and unsustainable tourism. Local communities struggled to protect their home, and we knew we had to act. In 2020, we founded Genau Indonesia to connect conservation with community well-being. What started as a small initiative grew, and by July 2023, we became Yayasan Genau Indonesia Hijau, strengthening our commitment to preserving Indonesia’s tropical rainforests and biodiversity.

Connecting People with Rainforests

We’re on a mission to connect people with Indonesia’s tropical rainforests and show just how incredible they are. From the towering trees to the tiniest critters, we want everyone to feel as connected to Indonesia's tropical rainforests as we do. We believe that the more people learn about the incredible plants and animals living there, the more they will want to protect them. Our journey began in Petungkriyono, Central Java, one of the last remaining rainforest pockets in Java. It’s a magical place: misty mountains, endemic species, and communities rich in local wisdom and traditions. We’re constantly researching biodiversity, social economies, and local practices to create programs that really make a difference.

Small Steps, Big Impact!

Kebun Genau

Since 2020, Kebun Genau has been our living lab, where people can learn about the wild edible plants hidden in tropical rainforests. It’s also a biodiversity hub, a place to learn about sustainable consumption, and a sanctuary for preserving and cultivating plants. Right now, we’ve got 43 species of wild edible plants (around 1,300 individuals!) thriving at Kebun Genau—and we’re just getting started.

Ramban Rimba

Ramban Rimba is all about celebrating wild edible plants as a source of climate-friendly, nutritious, and affordable food. We’re bringing people closer to nature through ecotourism experiences, practical training for local communities, and hands-on learning for students. It’s food for thought—and for the planet.

Bespoke Ecotourism Experiences

For the curious traveler, the nature enthusiast, or anyone craving a deeper connection with the environment, we’ve created bespoke ecotourism experiences. Together with local communities, we’ve designed programs that let you explore the rainforest’s beauty, understand its ecosystem, and immerse yourself in its cultural heritage. Plus, it’s a win-win: tourists get an unforgettable experience, and local communities gain additional income. Because conservation isn’t just about protecting land—it’s about empowering the people who call it home.

Vermicompost & Regenerative Soil

Did you know over 90% of land could be degraded by 2050 if we keep exploiting it? Sad. That’s why we’re turning cattle manure into organic fertilizer through vermicomposting. Our 4x8 square meter vermicompost house processes about one ton of dung every month, creating a natural alternative to chemical fertilizers and giving soil the love it needs to thrive. Healthy soil = healthy plants = a healthier planet.

He’s also on a mission to make science sound as cool as it actually is.

With a background in biodiversity and ecological conservation, Amelia is all about connecting the dots between nature, local wisdom, and community well-being.

He’s the one making sure everything runs smoothly on the ground—whether it’s coordinating activities, solving problems, or keeping everyone on track.
His special ability? Creating magical compost that brings soil back to life.

A passionate women-preneur and lecturer at Universitas Muhammadiyah Karanganyar, she loves creating programs that support communities and boost incomes through green business.
